Six dedicated class-D amplifiers drive three tweeters and three mid-woofers in a sealed, acoustically braced cabinet, delivering the depth, scale and stereo width that smaller smart speakers simply cannot reach.
Does the Sonos Five have Bluetooth?
No. The Sonos Five does not have Bluetooth. We state that plainly because it matters, and because you will find it listed incorrectly elsewhere.
The Five connects over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Apple AirPlay 2, and a 3.5 mm line-in. That is a deliberate design decision rather than an omission: Wi-Fi carries uncompressed, full-resolution audio, where Bluetooth compresses the signal before it reaches the speaker. On a speaker of this calibre, that difference is audible.
If you specifically need Bluetooth, the Sonos Era 100, Era 300 and Move 2 all have it. If you want the best sound Sonos can produce, this is the speaker.
Connecting a turntable or any analogue source
The Five has a 3.5 mm line-in, which makes it one of the few Sonos speakers you can plug a record player straight into.
- Turntable with a built-in phono preamp (such as the Audio-Technica AT-LP120X series): set the switch to LINE and run an RCA-to-3.5 mm cable into the Five. Done.
- Turntable without a preamp: add any external phono stage between the two.
- Sonos will then stream that line-in to every other Sonos speaker in the house over Wi-Fi, so your records can play in any room.
A wired line-in connection is the better-sounding route for vinyl in any case — no pairing, no dropouts mid-record, no compression.
One Five or a stereo pair?
A single Five plays in mono-blended stereo and will comfortably fill a large living room. Two Fives set up as a stereo pair is a different proposition entirely: genuine left and right separation, a proper soundstage, and the way the recording was actually mixed to be heard. For dedicated listening rooms and for vinyl, the pair is worth it.
You can also place a Five vertically, and Sonos detects the orientation automatically and adjusts its output to suit.
